Selaginella willdenowii

Updated: Dec 23, 2022

Selaginella willdenowii or the common name willdenowii spikemoss or vine spikemoss.

Selaginella willdenowii or Willdenow’s Spikemoss was named after a German naturalist – Carl Ludwig von Willdenow. Native to Singapore, this fern ally is easily identified by its iridescent, metallic bluish green fronds, which reveal hues of green and pink when viewed at different angles. Found naturally on the forest floors, its preference for low light and moist conditions makes Willdenow’s Spikemoss a suitable house plant and good groundcover in shady conditions.

The segmented leaves of willdenow's spikemoss (Selaginella willdenowii) might make it look like a fern, but it isn't; it's actually known as a fern ally. This is a popular garden plant because its blue-green leaves are iridescent, reflecting light in a variety of colors. This iridescence is thought to be a way of diffusing direct sunlight that would otherwise damage the plant since it is a shade-loving forest floor dweller.
